Region Pernik - short description:
Region Pernik is situated amongst the high plains and mountains of Middle West Bulgaria on the territory of 20 269,8 m2 comprising six municipalities - Pernik, Radomir, Breznik, Tran, Zemen and Kovachevtsi. To the northeast is Region Sofia, to the south is Region Kyustendil and to the west is the frontier with Republic of Serbia.Region Pernik is within 30 kilometers distance southwest from the capital Sofia. The distance to the border point Gyueshevo is 81 km., to Kulata 172 km., to Kalotina 83 km., to Kapitan Andreevo 347 km., to Vidin 243 km., to Strezimirovtsi 70 km.
Its geographic situation gives the region easy access and a considerable place in the national and European transport system. Through the centre of the region pass transport corridors N4 north-south /E - 79/ Vidin-Sofia-Kulata and N8 west-east /E -871/ Gyueshevo-Sofia-Burgas. These main lines of communication among the countries of West, Middle and East Europe are the fastest and are of considerable interest to a lot of foreign investors. There are easy links with all other cities from the region /Radomir, Breznik, Tran and Zemen/. The connection with the main city is mostly by motor transport. Of great importance to the region is also the railway transport. The international train Sofia - Kulata - Salonika and Athens goes through Pernik. Railway station Radomir is an important railway junction and this to a considerable extend stimulates production, development and commerce.
The nearest airport to the Region is within 40 km.
The Region gives great opportunities for regional team-work - not only with adjacent regions but also for taking part in Trans-bordering collaboration with Republic of Serbia.
Relief: A plain between hills. Average altitude 720 m.
Mountains: Vitosha, Lyulin, Golo Bardo, Lyubash.
Ores and minerals: Brown coal - coal-basin in Pernik. Limestone /suitable for production of cement and lime/ - in municipality Zemen, Pernik and the town of Batanovtsi. Dolomite /suitable with flux in metallurgy/ - section Kalkas and the village of Bosnek in municipality Pernik, the village of Galabnik in municipality Radomir. Riolit /gold trachit/ - in the village of Leshnikovtsi, municipality Tran /as facing stone/; quartz - quarry "Beli kamak", the village of Glogovitsa in municipality Tran. Petrol schists near the village of Izvor and Bornarevo. There are inert materials in the village of Dolni Rakovets.
