Kiten - short description:
The main pecularities of the relief in Kiten, which are very important for the tourism, are the two picturesque bays - Karaagach and Atliman and the golden beaches. There are other small wonderful bays on the Strandja coast /Sozopolski Kavaci, Stomoplo/ and each one of them has its own conditions and enchantment. The mixture of the sea with the wooded mountain-spurs of Strandja helps very much to the beauty of this place. The beaches are maybe the most important nature wealth of Kiten, which has caused its development as a resort village and as a centre for summer sea recreation. The village has two sandy beaches with a total area of 145 000 sqm. The Northern beach or the so called "Kiten-Atliman" is situated on the bay of the same name. It has an area of about 81 000 sqm including beautiful sand dunes. On both sides the beach is hemmed in by a high rocky shore. The Southern beach has two conditionally divided beaches - "Kiten-south" and "Kiten camping". It lies on the Urdoviza bay, which is more open to the sea. Its coast line is 1380 m long. To the south it reaches the mouth of river Karaagach and to the north - the beginning of the rocky peninsula Urdoviza, where now is the harbour pier. Close to Kiten are the beaches of "MMC /SeaYouthCentre/- Primorsko" and "Primorsko - south", which are among the biggest beaches on the Black Sea coast south of Bourgas.
Climate. Kiten has a soft, sunny, warm and humid transitional Mediterranean climate. The annual average temperature is 12C and the average minimum temperature in January is 2C. The typical for the inner parts of Strandja winter freezing weather is not characteristic of Kiten. The daily average temperature is 27C, summer is warm and the sunny hours from May till October are about 1700.
The northwest winds and the breeze circulation in the hot half-year prevail. The sea is calm for the most part of the summer season thanks to the good climate, combined with relief pecularities - the gulfs. Unsuiatble are the heavy rain- and thunderstorms at the end of the summer season, usually toward the end of August and September. Drainage. The resort is situated on the coast of the Black Sea, which is a closed sea, its only connection with the World Ocean is the Bosphorus Strait that links it with the Sea of Marmara. This fact and the big European rivers, flowing into the Black Sea- Danube, Dnepr, Dnestr and Don, are the reason for the low salinity of the water. The salinity of 18 ppm, the weak tides and also the lack of dangerous aquatic animals differs the Black Sea from the rest of the seas. These conditions give excellent premises for the development of summer tourism on the coasts of this water basin, as well as for other recreational activities like water sports, fishing and so on. Kiten lies on a small peninsula between the two Black Sea bays Karaagach and Atliman /the second one is the southest part of the Devilish bay/. Respectively into them are mouthing the rivers Karaagach /also called Kitenska river/ and Diavolska (Devilish river). Chub and grey mullet mountain barbel, pike-perch and other are to be found in both rivers. In the resort there is also a mineral spring that is located close to the "Atliman" camping. The water comes from a depth of about 700 m. It is canalized and is with ascertained chemical composition /nitrates chlorides 277 mg/dm3/. The water of this spring is used mainly for drinking.
Accommodation The resort village Kiten has about 30 000 beds, half of which are in holiday homes and bungalows and the rest of them - in private hotels, lodgings and campings. In Kiten there are over 80 stations of different enterprises, departments, educational and state institutions, sports clubs and about 30 luxury hotels, 1 sanatorium, 2 campings - "Atliman" and "Kiten" and many private lodgings. A great part of the holiday stations and hotels offer big variety of additional services and conveniences. There are built entire hotel complexes with restaurants swimming pools, sports halls, parking lots, park areas and other. Annually about 500 - 600 000 tourists rest in them. Camping "Atliman" is located next to the beach and the bay of the same name and camping "Kiten" - near the South beach, close to the mouth of the river Karaagach The both campings are kept in good condition and are prefered summer holiday places for many Bulgarian tourists. They have campsites as well as bungalows.
